Go Weird or Go Home , 5 Reasons to be Weird
Not long ago a huge tree fell on my roof during storm season destroying my kitchen, dining room and half of the living room. Although it was a stressful time and changed many things in my life for a while, rebuilding the house taught me valuable life lessons.
Like most people, I hired a project manager and construction company. My understanding was that once I hire someone to do a job for me, I am the boss; they must do what I need and like. However, it turned out that I was wrong: When I said I do not need a dining room and I prefer to replace it with living room, my contactor critiqued my plan! When I asked for one of the walls to be painted with chalkboard paint, it was perceived as odd! When I asked for my kitchen island to be larger than average, it was questioned. Mainly any creative thing I asked to be done, that in fact suited my lifestyle, was seen as unusual and therefore rejected at first.
Such experience made me think of how much society and norms force us to compromise our desires, killing our creativity and suppressing our uniqueness.
Let’s be honest to ourselves for once.
- Most of us start our day dressing up to confirm expectations and norm of the society.
- We buy things that market makes us believe “trendy” and a new “must have,”
- We act, walk, talk, and eat as society wants us to.
If we all have to do things based on what is the “norm” and just because everyone else does it, how can we express our uniqueness? What is a manifestation of our real characters?
Through this article, I am hoping I can convince my readers to be weird and proud as weird is only another term for unique.
Weird for the context of this article is defined as what most people find unusual, and that does not include ill behaviors.
Why be Weird?
1- Weird gets noticed. There is so much going on around us that it is hard to get noted. We have become a bunch of similar robots, and the best way to stand out is to be weird. Do not hesitate to show your uniqueness.
2- You attract your tribe instead of being surrounded by fake people.
Not everyone is comfortable being around weird people. Once you are weird only people with a similar mindset will be attracted to you. Chances are this way you end up surrounded by real people whose company you enjoy. As they say, “your vibe attracts your tribe.”
3- All new ideas, innovations, money-making businesses and even fame provoking acts started as a weird one.
Just look around and see how many famous people, artists, and products were seen as odd at the beginning!! Once you believe in you and the power of your weirdness new opportunities arise. (if you enjoy new ideas google “weird innovations” and explore weirdness)
4- Weird means you are comfortable with who you are.
Study the life of good leaders, attractive people, influential history makers and even millionaires, and you will see that their number one characteristic is that they like themselves. They have confidence in who they are.
5- Finally, who wants to be average or ordinary? An average is someone who settles with a boring life and ends up following weirdos who believed in themselves.
Need more reasons to embrace your weird side?
Here are some characteristics of weirdos: they are courageous, they value their happiness over what people say or think, they are confident, they are creative, they tend to be happier people, they are noted in society, and they can become impactful.
Now go weird or go home.
